Society, Site Plans, Rules and History

'The Allotment Society is a great asset to Falmouth. It has become a community in itself with schools and disabled people involved working together in a family spirit. It is also the green lung of the town and I am proud to be their President'.
Falmouth Mayor and Town Councillor Geoffrey Evans C.C

1. The Society
The site is leased from Falmouth Town Council by the Society and is run by a volunteer committee of plot-holders who are elected from the members at the AGM each January.  They are responsible for the letting of plots, management of society finances, keeping the site in good order and liaising with the Town Council.  The committee meets every month.
The allotments are divided into three areas: A, B and C sites, and each area is represented on the committee by two site representatives.  They are very happy to help with any queries you may have and their contact details are under the 'Contacts' tab on the left.

Allotment Plans - Sites A, B and C
The Society also has a thriving Social Committee, who can often be found at the Site Shed on A Site.  They run activities and events throughout the year and details of plant sales, trips out and work parties are posted on the gates to each site.

4. History of the Society

Following the Allotment Act of 1922, our current site was donated by the Silley-Cox family for the benefit of the people of Falmouth. Some years later when the allotments were established the same family donated a large timber building for communal use. This is still standing and is currently being carefully renovated by volunteer members to bring it back into full use.
Originally the site was larger and as was the custom in those early days, pig and chickens were kept by allotment holders. The current area is a mixture of large and smaller allotments over three sites separated by  the Little in Site lane which lies in then pleasant countryside above Swanpool. The allotments are managed by an elected committee of the Falmouth & District Allotment and Garden Society, whilst the sites are administered by Falmouth Town Council as landlord.
There is a strong demand for membership, leading to an allocated plot. Currently we have a waiting list of thirty with an expected wait of eighteen months. Members are encouraged to take part in the many social activities such as BBQ’s, quiz nights and coach trips, all of which help us to feel part of a friendly community

5. The Allotment Wildlife Garden

The area of unused land between B and C sites has been cleared of rubbish and is being turned into a nature reserve by a group of members and their children who work together under the leadership of Karen Llewellyn.
The aim is to have lots of wild flowers and bushes which will not only provide a peaceful spot but be a haven for wildlife which members and children can quietly enjoy.
A group of about fifteen adults and children made a good start on Saturday 14th April 2012, clearing brambles and undergrowth, replanting and sowing wildflower seed, provided by the Britain in Bloom organisation. Homemade bird feed treats, an insect haven and for the humans, a picnic bench were all set up in the area.

6. Big Lottery Bid - Spring 2013

In Feb 2013 we applied to Falmouth Town Council Awards for £1000 to set alongside our Big Lottery Application. This we received in full. We had already received £250 from Falmouth Fire Station (Fireworks Awards) and £100 from Marlborough School. The details in the Falmouth Town Application give a good overview of the planned developments if we are successful with our further lottery bid.
